Betfair Exchange review: the deepest market
Betfair opened in June 2000 as the first betting exchange, and a quarter of a century on it still sets the standard for depth. Premier League football, the Cheltenham Festival and Wimbledon match fastest there, at the narrowest gaps between back and lay prices. For anyone staking more than pocket money, that depth is the reason to hold an account.
This Betfair Exchange review covers the exchange only. The fixed-odds Sportsbook shares the login but sets its own prices and has its own Betfair review. Below you will find the licence, the commission packages, the Expert Fee, the trading features and the account tools, and the file shows our measured football margin with the 5% rate included.
Betfair Exchange commission and packages
Every Betfair market carries a Market Base Rate, the share of net winnings taken when it settles, and for football and most sports it is 5%. As at other exchanges, losing markets cost nothing, and backing and laying inside the same market is netted first. A trader who hedges a position before kick-off pays only on the overall profit.
For UK and Irish customers the rate actually charged depends on the My Betfair Rewards package. Rewards is the default and keeps 5%. Basic cuts the charge to 2% but gives up Sportsbook and Exchange promotions. Rewards+ raises it to 8% in exchange for richer extras, such as a monthly refund on losses, and suits few regular winners.
Betfair Points, once the engine of the old discount scheme, still accrue at one point for every 10p of commission paid. They no longer set the commission rate for UK and Irish customers, though they still do in some international jurisdictions and on Australian events. If you remember choosing a discount level years ago, the package choice has replaced it.
Choosing a package: the sums
A quick example shows the stakes. Say your exchange bets produce £1,000 of net winnings in a month. Basic costs you £20, Rewards £50 and Rewards+ £80. Rewards is only worth choosing if the promotions you use are worth more than £30 a month to you, and Rewards+ needs a further £30 on top.
For most punters who bet on the exchange every week, Basic is the cheaper choice, since promotion value rarely reaches those figures. You can switch at the start of each month, once a month, under My Betfair Rewards in the account menu. Review it after a quiet month: the right package depends on how you actually used the account.
The Expert Fee for very profitable customers
Since 6 January 2025 the Expert Fee has replaced the Premium Charge, which looked at lifetime profit and could take up to 60%. The new fee looks at gross profit over the last 52 weeks in which your account was active, and it applies only to accounts in lifetime profit that have bet on more than 100 markets. Under £25,000 there is nothing to pay; between £25,000 and £100,000 the rate is 20%, and above £100,000 it is 40%. The rate is a total, not an extra: each week Betfair tops up the commission you generated until your fees reach that share of your gross profit, after a buffer for earlier losses and commission.
At launch Betfair said the change would halve the number of customers who pay and lower costs for others, and customers move between bands as results change. If your gross profit over the last 52 active weeks never comes near £25,000, the Expert Fee is irrelevant to you. If you might, track your 52-active-week figure in the Expert Fee section of your account, where Betfair also shows your current buffer.
Liquidity and the 90-minute payout
Depth is what this Betfair Exchange review keeps returning to. Big football and racing markets often hold far more money than any rival exchange, so a large stake can be matched without dragging the price. Third-party trading software connects through Betfair’s API, and the professional traders who use it help keep the queues full.
Laying is the other half of the product. Lay a team at 4.00 to a £10 backer’s stake and you risk £30, your liability if that team wins. If it fails to win, you collect the £10 and Betfair takes 5% of it, leaving £9.50. Always size a lay by the liability, never by the stake.
On Match Odds 90 markets Betfair pays out at the 90-minute mark. If the team you backed is ahead when the clock reaches 90:00, the bet is settled as a winner, and a stoppage-time equaliser does not change it. Accumulators are not available: the exchange takes single bets only, so multiples belong on the Sportsbook.
How commission changes the prices in our tables
Our football tables take Betfair’s exchange prices for match-result markets and reduce each one by the 5% Market Base Rate before measuring the margin. A back price of 3.00 becomes 2.90 after commission, which is the figure a bookmaker’s 3.00 must beat. On the Basic package your effective price would be better than our tables show.
That makes our measurement a cautious one. We use 5% because it is the rate a new customer pays unless they choose otherwise. The bookmaker margins page shows how exchange prices compare with fixed-odds firms in the current tables, and our betting exchanges page sets Betfair against Smarkets and Matchbook side by side.
Promotions on the exchange
Betfair runs no sign-up offer on the exchange at the moment. Its exchange promotions page lists only Refer and Earn, which pays an existing customer £10 in cash for each friend who joins with their code and stakes £10 within 60 days, up to five friends. The Sportsbook welcome deal is a separate promotion and does not cover exchange bets.
That suits the product. An exchange earns from commission, so the rate you pay and the liquidity you find matter on every bet, while any sign-up offer touches only your first weeks. Customers on the Basic package forgo exchange promotions altogether, so check which package you are on before you count on one.
Licence, and the December 2025 case
The exchange is licensed by the Gambling Commission to TSE Malta LP, account 39561, with a Gibraltar head office. The register entry shows a remote betting intermediary licence, the exchange category, active since November 2014. The Sportsbook sits with a different Flutter company, PPB Counterparty Services Limited, which matters only if a dispute ever needs naming the right firm.
TSE Malta LP was one of four Betfair and Paddy Power licensees that agreed in December 2025 to pay £2 million in lieu of a financial penalty, plus costs. The Commission found that signs of harm, including overnight play and rapid deposits, were not spotted or acted on in time between August 2023 and May 2024.
If something goes wrong with an exchange bet, complain to Betfair in writing and keep the reference number. A case still open after eight weeks can go to the independent dispute service named in the terms, free of charge. The Commission itself does not settle individual disputes, but it sets the rules every licensee must follow.
Payments, the app and support
Payments run through the same Betfair account as the Sportsbook: debit card, Apple Pay, Pay by Bank, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and bank transfer. PayPal, Skrill and Neteller withdrawals take one to four hours, Apple Pay two to three working days, cards two to five and bank transfers one to five.
The exchange has its own app on iPhone and Android, separate from the Sportsbook app, with biometric login, bet notifications and full in-play trading. It rates highly on the App Store and a little lower on Google Play; the file above has the figures. Support runs 24 hours a day through live chat after login and through @BetfairCS on X.
Safer gambling on the exchange
Betfair offers deposit limits, loss limits, session limits, reality checks, time-outs and self-exclusion, and the exchange account uses the same settings. A loss limit suits trading well, since it caps the damage from a run of in-play positions however many times you top up. Set it before an evening of football, not during one.
You will also be asked to choose a financial limit before your first deposit, a step the Gambling Commission has required of every operator since 31 October 2025. To block every licensed site at once, register free with GamStop for six months or longer; exchanges are covered just like bookmakers.
Betfair Exchange review verdict
Our Betfair Exchange review verdict: it is the exchange to hold if you stake seriously, trade in-play or bet on anything beyond the biggest events. The liquidity is unmatched in Britain, the 90-minute payout is a fair touch for football backers, and the Basic package brings commission down to 2% for punters who do not chase promotions.
At the default 5% it is the dearest of the three main exchanges, and very profitable customers can owe the Expert Fee as well. Our advice: pick Basic unless the promotions clearly pay for themselves, compare prices with Smarkets or Matchbook on mainstream football, and keep Betfair for the markets only it can fill.
Frequently asked questions
What commission does Betfair Exchange charge?
The Market Base Rate is 5% of net winnings on each market. UK and Irish customers can change it through My Betfair Rewards: Basic charges 2%, Rewards 5% and Rewards+ 8%.
Which My Betfair Rewards package is cheapest?
Basic, at 2%, is the cheapest on commission, but it removes access to Sportsbook and Exchange promotions. Rewards+ costs 8% in return for enhanced rewards such as a monthly loss refund.
How often can I change my Betfair commission package?
You can switch at the start of each month, once per month. The option sits under My Betfair Rewards in the Promotions and Rewards section of My Account.
What is the Betfair Expert Fee?
It is an extra charge for the most profitable customers, based on gross profit over the last 52 weeks in which the account was active. It applies only to accounts in lifetime profit with more than 100 markets bet. Below £25,000 nothing is due; between £25,000 and £100,000 total fees, commission included, are topped up to 20% of gross profit, and above £100,000 to 40%.
Does Betfair still have the Premium Charge?
No. The Expert Fee replaced the Premium Charge from 6 January 2025. The old charge looked at lifetime profit and could reach 60%, while the new fee looks only at the last 52 active weeks.
Can I place an accumulator on Betfair Exchange?
No. The exchange takes single bets on individual markets only. Multiples have to go on the Betfair Sportsbook, which is a separate fixed-odds product in the same account.
What is the Betfair 90-minute payout?
On Match Odds 90 markets, a bet on a team that is winning at the 90-minute mark is settled as a winner straight away. Goals scored in stoppage time do not change the result of that bet.
How fast are Betfair Exchange withdrawals?
PayPal, Skrill and Neteller withdrawals take one to four hours. Apple Pay takes two to three working days, debit cards two to five and bank transfers one to five, and eligible Visa Debit cards can use Fast Funds.
