Who runs Betway in Britain
The UK licence belongs to Betway Limited, Gambling Commission account 39372, with a head office in Gzira, Malta. Its real-event betting and casino permissions date from November 2014, and virtual-event betting was added in June 2017. You can confirm the status, and any action taken against the company, on the public register.
The register lists four active trading names on that licence: betway, hippodrome online, jackpot city and spin casino. Three of them are casino brands, which explains why Betway’s own site carries a large casino section beside the sportsbook. This review covers the sportsbook only. A decision by the regulator against Betway Limited would apply to all four names at once.
The Betway sign up offer: four tokens
The Betway sign up offer is simple to trigger. Register, deposit by debit card and place a £10 pre-event bet at odds of 2.0 or bigger within seven days. Once that bet settles, four £10 free bet tokens land in your account. PayPal, Revolut and Neteller deposits do not qualify, so pay in by card the first time.
Since October 2025 every operator has had to ask you to set a financial limit before your first deposit, so expect that screen during sign-up. Take it seriously. The figure you enter there carries more weight than any later promise to yourself, and it can be lowered at once if the first weeks go badly.
The catch is in the tokens. Each must go on an accumulator or bet builder of four legs or more, with combined odds of at least 4.0, and all four expire after seven days. Say you stake one £10 token on a four-fold at 5.00 and it wins: the return is £40, since the stake is not paid back.

How the free bets compare with rivals

In March 2020 the Commission announced that Betway would pay £11.6 million, half in lieu of a penalty and half divested, over failings with seven high-spending customers. A second case followed in September 2022: a £408,915 penalty after Betway’s logo appeared on children’s pages of West Ham United’s website, including a colouring page.
