Bookmaker review

Betfair review: sign up offer and Acca Edge

This Betfair review covers the Sportsbook, the fixed-odds side of the brand, and it is one of the better all-round bookmakers in Britain. Football prices are keen in our data, Acca Edge refunds a losing leg in cash and e-wallet payouts land within hours. The drawback is the welcome offer: its free bets only work on multiples.

Sportsbook or exchange? Where this Betfair review starts

Betfair launched in June 2000 as a betting exchange, where customers back and lay against each other, and is still best known for it. The Sportsbook came later: a bookmaker that sets its own prices. Both sit behind one login, and you switch between them from the same menu, so it is easy to forget they are separate products.

This page rates the Sportsbook only, the side most new customers land on first. The exchange works on commission instead of a built-in margin and is covered on our betting exchanges page, where we compare it with the other exchanges. The file below shows the Sportsbook’s licence, our rating, its football margins and the welcome offer.

Who holds the Sportsbook licence

The Sportsbook is licensed by the Gambling Commission to PPB Counterparty Services Limited, account 39439, which you can check on the public register. The exchange sits with a different licensee, TSE Malta LP, under a betting intermediary licence. Both belong to Flutter Entertainment plc, which also owns Paddy Power and shares the same licensee arrangements.

The split looks like housekeeping, and mostly it is. It does matter if you ever have a dispute: a complaint about a Sportsbook bet is a matter for PPB Counterparty Services, while an exchange bet falls under TSE Malta. You complain to Betfair first and can take an unresolved case to an independent dispute service after eight weeks.

Betfair sign up offer in plain terms

The Betfair sign up offer rewards a first Sportsbook bet at evens or bigger with free bets that can only go on bet builders, accumulators and multiples. Only debit card, Apple Pay and Pay by Bank deposits qualify, and an SMS phone check is part of registration. The value and the validity period are in the box above.

Free bets keep the winnings and lose the stake. A £10 free bet on a treble at 7.00 returns £60 if all three legs win, since the £10 is not paid back. Cashed-out, void and starting-price bets do not count as the qualifying bet, and neither do bets on both sides of the same market.

Restricting the free bets to multiples suits some punters better than others. If you already like a Saturday acca, the offer fits your habits. If you only ever back singles, the welcome deal is worth less to you than its headline, and the free bets on our free bets page may include simpler single-bet offers.

Readers who came to this Betfair review for the exchange welcome deal should note that it is a separate promotion. It applies to a first exchange bet, and Sportsbook bets do not count towards it, so the two cannot be stacked from one stake. Our betting exchanges page explains how commission changes the value of anything won there.

Free bets aside: Acca Edge and other extras

Acca Edge is the standout feature. If one leg of a treble or bigger accumulator fails, the stake comes back as cash. Most acca insurance pays a free bet, so you lose the stake again if the next bet wins; cash can be withdrawn or re-used freely. For regular multiples punters that difference adds up quickly.

Cash out is available, including partial cash out, and Bet Builder covers the main football markets. In-play betting and live streaming are offered, with streams needing a funded account. One side point: because the exchange sits behind the same login, you can compare a Sportsbook price with the exchange price on the same event in a few taps.

Football margins and coverage

For this Betfair review we used the football prices we record each day across seven English and Scottish competitions. In the current tables the Sportsbook’s match-result margins are among the lower ones for a fixed-odds bookmaker. Oddly, its League One and League Two prices look keener than its Premier League book, the reverse of the usual pattern.

Coverage is the other half of the picture. The coverage score counts the share of tracked fixtures a bookmaker has priced when our daily snapshot runs, so a book that opens lower-league and cup markets late scores lower. The live figure sits in the file above. The Betfair Exchange, with commission included, sits below every fixed-odds book in our data.

How the score in this Betfair review is built: seven criteria, with measured football price the heaviest at 30%. Racing and extras and payments count 15% each, while safer-gambling tools, the welcome offer, coverage and the app take 10% apiece. Price and coverage can pull in opposite directions for any bookmaker, and our how we rate page shows the arithmetic.

Racing on the Sportsbook

Our odds data covers football only, so racing enters the rating through features. Live racing streams are available with a funded account, and cash out works on racing bets too. Promotions also depend on the My Betfair Rewards package you pick, since the Basic package swaps them for lower exchange commission.

Serious racing punters should look at the exchange as well, where you can lay a horse as well as back it and the price is set by other customers. Our horse racing betting sites page compares the bookmakers that offer best odds guaranteed and extra places, which may matter more than headline prices on a busy Saturday card.

Payments: fast e-wallets, slower cards

Betfair accepts debit cards, Apple Pay, Pay by Bank, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and bank transfer. The minimum deposit is £5 by card, Apple Pay or Pay by Bank, but £30 for the e-wallets and £20 by bank transfer. Withdrawals go to all of them bar Pay by Bank. Credit cards are banned for betting in Great Britain, and no licensed UK bookmaker accepts crypto.

E-wallet withdrawals are quick, at one to four hours. Cards are slower, at two to five working days, although eligible Visa Debit cards can use Visa Fast Funds. Apple Pay withdrawals take two to three working days and bank transfers one to five. If speed matters, link PayPal; remember that e-wallet deposits do not qualify for the welcome reward.

The Betfair Sportsbook app

The Sportsbook app is rated highly on both the App Store and Google Play, with well over a hundred thousand iPhone reviews behind its score, one of the largest samples among UK betting apps. The ratings in the file above feed our app criterion. The exchange has a separate app with its own ratings, which this review does not count.

Customer service runs 24 hours a day through live chat once you log in, by phone on 0844 871 7000, by email and through the @BetfairCS account on X. The need to log in before chatting is a small annoyance if your problem is a locked account, in which case the phone line is the better route.

Limits and controls

The Sportsbook offers deposit limits, loss limits, session limits, reality checks, time-outs and self-exclusion, which is more than the regulatory minimum. A loss limit is the most useful extra for accumulator punters, because it caps what you can lose over a period regardless of how often you redeposit. Those extra tools score points in our method.

Like every licensed online bookmaker in Great Britain, Betfair also takes part in GAMSTOP, which excludes you from all of them with one free registration. Since October 2025 operators have had to prompt you to set a financial limit before your first deposit. Our responsible gambling page explains where to find free, confidential help.

The December 2025 settlement

On 17 December 2025 four Flutter licensees trading as Betfair and Paddy Power, including PPB Counterparty Services, agreed to pay £2 million in lieu of a financial penalty, shared between them, plus the Commission’s costs. It followed a section 116 licence review after a compliance assessment in April and May 2024.

The Commission found breaches of the code provision on remote customer interaction. Signs of harm such as overnight play and rapid deposits were not detected or acted on in time between August 2023 and May 2024. The details are in the Commission’s public statement, and the case does not affect our score.

Betfair review: who it suits

The verdict of this Betfair review is positive for most football punters. Keen prices in our data, Acca Edge cash refunds and fast PayPal payouts make it a strong main account, and the exchange one tap away is a real advantage. The sign up offer suits multiples fans better than singles bettors.

It is less suited to punters who mostly bet singles, since the welcome free bets only work on multiples, bet builders and accumulators. Card users waiting days for a withdrawal may also grow impatient. For accumulators on Premier League and EFL football, though, the cash refund on a failed leg is the most valuable acca protection we have found.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the Betfair Sportsbook the same as the Betfair Exchange?

No. The Sportsbook is a fixed-odds bookmaker licensed to PPB Counterparty Services Limited, while the Exchange matches bets between customers and is licensed to TSE Malta LP. Both are reached from one Betfair account.

Who owns Betfair?

Betfair is owned by Flutter Entertainment plc, the group that also owns Paddy Power. The brand launched in June 2000 as a betting exchange and added the Sportsbook later.

What is Betfair Acca Edge?

Acca Edge refunds your stake if one leg of a treble or bigger accumulator lets you down. The refund is paid as cash, not as a free bet, which makes it more valuable than most acca insurance.

Which deposits qualify for the Betfair sign up offer?

Only debit card, Apple Pay and Pay by Bank deposits qualify. PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and Paysafecard deposits are excluded, and the remaining terms are in the offer box on this page.

How long does a Betfair withdrawal take?

PayPal, Skrill and Neteller withdrawals take one to four hours. Debit cards take two to five working days, Apple Pay two to three working days and bank transfers one to five working days.

What is the minimum deposit at Betfair?

It is £5 by debit card, Apple Pay or Pay by Bank. PayPal, Skrill and Neteller need £30, and a bank transfer £20.

Was Betfair fined by the Gambling Commission?

In December 2025 four Betfair and Paddy Power licensees, including the Sportsbook's, agreed to pay £2 million in lieu of a financial penalty, plus the Commission's costs. The case concerned failures to act on signs of harm between August 2023 and May 2024.

How do I contact Betfair customer services?

Live chat runs 24 hours a day once you log in, and there is a phone line on 0844 871 7000, email and the @BetfairCS account on X. Chat is usually the quickest route.

Can I use Betfair free bets on singles?

Not with the current welcome reward, which is paid as free bets for bet builders, accumulators and other multiples. Check the offer box for the latest version, since the terms change.
