William Hill review: sign up offer and owners

Our William Hill review verdict: a dependable all-rounder with a generous football acca boost, fast Visa Direct payouts and the rare link between shop and online account through the PLUS card. Two things need care. The sign up offer must be claimed on the website, not in the app, and the regulatory record is heavier than most.

Should you open a William Hill account?

Our William Hill review answer for most punters is yes. It covers the big sports thoroughly, streams selected racing, football, basketball and tennis on William Hill TV, and pays out to a Visa debit card within hours. Its football acca boost is one of the more generous long-running promotions we have read, starting on accas of just two legs.

The account works differently from most rivals in one respect. A William Hill PLUS card links your online account with the high street betting shops, which few online-only names can offer at all. For punters who still enjoy a Saturday in the shop, that is a genuine reason to choose this brand over an online-only name.

Ownership today: Evoke and the Bally’s Intralot deal

William Hill is owned by Evoke plc, the company that used to be called 888 Holdings. In June 2026 Evoke agreed an all-share takeover by Bally’s Intralot, and Evoke’s shareholders approved the deal in August 2026. At our last check in October 2026, completion was still pending, with the companies pointing to the end of 2026 or early 2027.

What does a change of owner mean for a customer? Very little in the short term. The licence, the account terms and the money you hold stay with the licensee, not the parent. A new owner can change promotions or the product over time, so we will revisit this William Hill review once the takeover completes.

The licence and two Gambling Commission cases

The UK licence sits with WHG (International) Limited, Gambling Commission account 39225, with its head office at Europort in Gibraltar. The licence covers betting, casino, bingo and gambling software, and the register lists williamhill.com as its domain. Anyone can confirm the licence details, including its status, on the public register.

On 28 March 2023 the Commission announced that William Hill businesses would pay a record £19.2m, with £12.5m of it falling on WHG (International). The Commission’s statement described weak checks on new and returning customers, slow identification of harm and large deposits taken without checks. It was the biggest penalty package the regulator had imposed at that point.

One finding stood out: 331 customers who had self-excluded with Mr Green, then part of the same group, were able to gamble with WHG. A smaller case followed on 7 August 2025: a penalty of £82,687 for breaching a code on identifying individual customers, which the company self-reported, fixed and co-operated over.

The sign up offer: the app exclusion and other fine print

The box above shows the current sign up offer. The single most important line is that it cannot be claimed through the mobile app, in a shop or by telephone. Open the website in a browser, register there and place the qualifying bet there. After that, the app works as normal for everything else.

The qualifying bet must be a single at 1/2 or bigger, placed from cash funds. Accounts funded by PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Paysafe and several other methods are excluded, and so are accounts topped up with the PLUS card. A debit card deposit is the clean route. Virtual sports do not count, and the free bets arrive once the bet settles.

How the William Hill free bets actually pay

Once credited, the free bets last seven days. Each one is used as a single stake, so you cannot split one across several selections. The stake is never returned: a winning free bet pays the winnings only. On a round example, a free bet at 5.0 returns four times its value, where cash would return five.

There is no wagering requirement on what you win. The Gambling Commission’s January 2026 rules cap wagering on any bonus at ten times its value and stop a betting welcome offer from including casino spins, so the deal is purely betting credit. Use the free bets on markets you already wanted, at prices you think fair, within the week.

The acca boost and #YourOdds

The football acca boost adds a percentage to your winnings that rises with the number of legs, starting on two-leg accas, provided each selection is priced at 1/5 or bigger. The scale climbs steeply for very long accas, but long accas win very rarely. The boost is most useful on the four or five-leg accas people actually place.

Build #YourOdds is the William Hill bet builder, and #YourOdds is also the hashtag for asking the traders on X to price a custom bet. Cash out is available in full, though partial cash out is not offered. If you like to bank part of a winning acca and let the rest run, that missing option is a real drawback.

Football margins in this William Hill review

William Hill is part of the odds feed we record every day, so the file above shows its median football margin and where that places it on price among the bookmakers we track. The margin is the edge built into the match-result prices. Our margin tables break the figure down by competition.

The current tables show lower-league football carrying wider margins than the Premier League at most bookmakers, and an acca multiplies the margin of every leg. That is worth remembering with any boost: a percentage on top of the winnings helps, but it does not undo the edge in each price. Short accas at fair prices remain the better bet.

William Hill racing: BOG and extra places

Best odds guaranteed covers UK and Irish horse racing at William Hill, and you opt in to it. Once it applies, a winner is paid at the starting price whenever that beats the price you took. Extra places are offered on selected races, which improves the each way terms in big handicaps where the places are where the value lies.

Streams on William Hill TV cover selected racing alongside football, basketball and tennis, so the big meetings can be watched from the account. Bettors who follow form closely will find it handy on busy afternoons. If you back horses most days, pair this account with one other bookmaker offering best odds guaranteed and take the better early price each time.

Deposits, withdrawals and the PLUS card

You can deposit with a debit card, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Apple Pay, paysafecard or bank transfer. Withdrawals go back to a debit card, PayPal or a bank account. Visa Direct withdrawals arrive within four hours, e-wallets within 24 hours and other debit cards in one to three working days. Credit cards are banned for gambling in Great Britain.

The PLUS card is a side benefit for anyone near a shop. It connects your online account with the shops, so the counter and the website feel like one bookmaker. Just keep it apart from the welcome offer, because a PLUS card deposit disqualifies the account from claiming it. Order matters here: claim first, link the card later.

The app and customer support

The App Store rating is high, while the Google Play score trails it by a fair margin; the file above has the current numbers. The app covers everything except the welcome offer, which is the oddity of this William Hill review. Support runs through live chat around the clock, though a chatbot handles most conversations at first.

There is also support through X and an email route for escalating complaints. For anything that matters, put it in writing and keep the reference. Eight weeks without a resolution opens the door to the alternative dispute resolution body listed in the terms, which by Commission rule costs you nothing.

Safer-gambling tools and the rules behind them

Self-exclusion is available on every account, and the licensee is a participating company in GamStop, which blocks you from all licensed online gambling sites at once. Given the 2023 findings about self-excluded customers slipping through, GamStop is the stronger choice for anyone who wants a break, because it does not rely on one operator’s systems.

The account will also ask you to set a financial limit before your first deposit, as every licensed bookmaker must since 31 October 2025. From 30 September 2026 a limit called a deposit limit must count everything paid in, whatever you withdraw. Choose a monthly figure you can afford to lose, and lower it the moment betting stops feeling like fun.

Who should pick William Hill

Read as a whole, this William Hill review says pick it if you like football accas and want the boost, if you value a fast Visa Direct payout, or if you still bet in shops and want them linked to your online account. Racing punters get best odds guaranteed and extra places, and the bet builder is easy to use.

Look elsewhere if you mostly bet through an app and want a welcome offer there, or if partial cash out is part of your routine. Punters for whom a clean regulatory record matters should weigh the 2023 case seriously. For a shop regular with a Visa debit card, the PLUS card alone makes William Hill worth opening.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I claim the William Hill sign up offer in the app?

No. The full terms say the welcome offer is not available through the mobile app, in shops or by telephone. Register and place the qualifying bet on the website, then use the app as normal afterwards.

Who owns William Hill?

William Hill belongs to Evoke plc, the company formerly called 888 Holdings. Evoke has agreed an all-share takeover by Bally's Intralot, which Evoke shareholders approved in August 2026, with completion expected around the end of 2026 or early 2027.

Are William Hill free bet stakes returned?

No. Winnings from a William Hill free bet are paid without the stake. Each free bet is also used as one stake, so you cannot split it across several bets.

How long do William Hill free bets last?

The free bets arrive once the qualifying bet has settled and are valid for seven days. Use them inside that week or they expire.

Does PayPal count for the William Hill welcome offer?

No. Accounts funded by PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and several other methods, including the PLUS card, are excluded. The qualifying bet must also be placed from cash funds, so a debit card deposit is the straightforward route.

How fast does William Hill pay out?

A Visa Direct withdrawal arrives within four hours, e-wallets within 24 hours and other debit cards in one to three working days. Bank transfers take longer.

Has William Hill been fined?

Yes. In March 2023 its online licensee paid £12.5m as part of a record £19.2m package across William Hill businesses, and in August 2025 it paid an £82,687 penalty over customer identification checks.

What is the William Hill PLUS card?

It is a card that links your online account with William Hill betting shops. Note that accounts funded with the PLUS card do not qualify for the online welcome offer.

Does William Hill have best odds guaranteed?

Yes, on UK and Irish horse racing, as an opt-in concession. If the starting price is bigger than the price you took, you are paid at the starting price. Extra places are offered on selected races too.
