What we look for in horse racing betting sites
Our price measurement covers football only. We record match odds every day, but we do not record racing prices, so no figure on this page claims that one bookmaker pays better odds on horses than another. Racing is rated on what we can check: best odds guaranteed, extra places, streaming and the conditions attached to each of them.
That focus is deliberate. A punter who backs at 9am and watches the price drift has more to gain from a solid BOG concession than from a tenth of a point on the morning odds. Extra places change the maths on every big handicap, and a stream you cannot watch without a stake is worth knowing about before you join.
The ranking above shows only horse racing betting sites that offer best odds guaranteed, sorted by our overall rating. Racing and extras count for 15% of that rating, alongside price on football, payments, safer-gambling tools, the welcome offer, market coverage and app scores. The full weighting is set out on our how we rate page.
Best odds guaranteed and its conditions
Best odds guaranteed pays you at the starting price when the SP is bigger than the odds you took. Our best odds guaranteed guide works through an example. On this page the interest is the small print, because the concession looks identical on every banner and differs a great deal once you read the conditions.
William Hill’s version is opt-in, according to Racing Post. It covers UK and Irish racing from 08:00 on race day until the off, applies to win and each way singles and multiples on the win market, and caps the extra winnings at £25k a day. Football Ground Guide gives a 10am start, so check the time in your account.
Ladbrokes runs BOG on UK and Irish racing from 08:00 on race day, with a cap of £50k per customer per day, as Racing Post reports. Betfred covers all UK and Irish racing from 8am until the off, but StableBet lists exclusions for ante-post, Tote pool bets, Lucky 15s and boosted prices. Football Ground Guide adds greyhounds at both firms.
BoyleSports applies the concession to UK and Irish horse and greyhound racing on bets placed after 8am on race day, and Football Ground Guide cites a daily maximum of £50,000. Sky Bet pays the bigger of taken price and SP on UK and Irish races. Coral, Paddy Power, BetVictor and bet365 all offer BOG, with fewer published details.
Each way terms and extra places
An each way bet is two bets, one on the win and one on the place, and the place part pays a fraction of the odds. Standard UK terms pay two places in races of five to seven runners and three in races of eight or more. Our each way betting guide covers handicaps and worked returns.
Extra places stretch those terms. On a big Saturday handicap a bookmaker might pay five or six places where the rules require four, which turns a horse that finished fifth into a returning bet. bet365, Sky Bet, Paddy Power, William Hill, Coral, Betfred and BoyleSports all run extra place races, usually picking the most competitive handicaps of the day.
Sky Bet makes the boldest claim in this area. Racing Post quotes the firm as offering more extra place races than any other bookmaker. We have not counted the races across bookmakers ourselves, so treat that as the company’s own statement. Either way, check the extra place list each morning, because it changes daily.
Extra places are not free value in every case. A bookmaker paying an extra place may price that race a little shorter than a rival, so on a short-priced favourite the standard terms elsewhere can work out better. The concession pays off most on bigger-priced horses in large fields, where finishing fifth or sixth is a realistic outcome.
Live streaming at UK horse racing betting sites
Most UK horse racing betting sites stream races, each with its own entry rule. Sky Bet streams mainly UK and Irish racing to customers who place a qualifying bet of at least £1. Paddy Power and BetVictor also ask for a qualifying bet on racing streams, while bet365 needs a funded account or a bet in the last 24 hours.
Coral streams UK and Irish racing, and William Hill shows selected racing on William Hill TV. Midnite covers selected UK and Irish meetings, though it offers no BOG, which explains its absence from the table. If you plan to watch more races than you bet on, check whether the bookmaker requires a stake on every stream.
A stream is useful for more than entertainment. Watching how your horse ran, whether it was hampered or finished strongly, tells you more about its next run than the result alone. Many racing punters keep notes this way. It is a habit worth building, and it costs nothing beyond the qualifying bet some firms ask for.
Caps rarely matter to a casual punter. A £25k or £50k daily cap on extra winnings only bites on big stakes at long odds. The start time matters far more, because a bet struck at 7am on a horse that drifts may fall outside the window. If you bet early, pick a firm whose concession is live when you are.
Greyhound punters should read the terms twice. Football Ground Guide lists greyhound racing under BOG at Ladbrokes, Betfred and Coral, and BoyleSports covers UK and Irish dogs as well. Elsewhere the published terms mention horses only. If you bet on the evening dogs from Romford or Towcester, that difference decides which account earns its place on your phone.
Exchanges for racing punters
Betting exchanges do not offer best odds guaranteed, which keeps them out of the table above, but they still matter to anyone comparing horse racing betting sites. Betfair Exchange is the largest, and bookies.com reports that Cheltenham markets match fastest there at the tightest spreads. Smarkets also has strong liquidity on UK racing, though its niche markets run shallower.
Matchbook runs Matchbook Zero, which removes commission on selected horse racing and football markets, with payout caps attached. An exchange lets you lay a horse as well as back it, which no bookmaker allows. The price you see is set by other punters, and the commission comes off net winnings per market. Our betting exchanges page explains the mechanics.
Racing extras beyond the price
Some bookmakers add perks that have nothing to do with odds. Coral runs a free-to-join Coral Racing Club with racehorse ownership perks, plus free-to-play prediction games under the Racing Super Series name. The bet365 6 Horses Challenge is a free game in which you pick winners. These cost nothing, but they keep you logging in.
BetVictor leans heavily on racing: its main ongoing promotions are BOG on UK and Irish races and racing price boosts. Paddy Power is known for money back specials, which Racing Post describes as a leading feature of the brand. BoyleSports has a strong Irish focus, and its BoyleXtra card links the online account with its shops.
Betfred has a retail angle too. Cash can be paid in at a Betfred shop and credited to the online account, and online winnings can be collected as cash at the counter within the shop’s daily limit. For a racegoer who still visits a betting shop, that link between counter and app is more useful than any promotion.
Ante-post, non-runners and Rule 4
Ante-post betting means backing a horse days or weeks before the race, often at bigger odds. The risk is that your horse never runs: an ante-post stake on a non-runner is normally lost. BOG rarely covers these bets, since most concessions start on the morning of the race, and Betfred’s terms exclude ante-post explicitly.
Rule 4 applies when a horse is withdrawn after a market has formed. Winning bets placed before the withdrawal are reduced by a set amount per pound, reflecting the weaker field. The size of the deduction depends on the price of the withdrawn horse. A best odds guaranteed payout can still be subject to Rule 4.
A side note on tax and minimum bets
Here is a detail most racing punters never hear about. From 1 April 2027 the duty on remote betting rises to 25%, but remote bets on UK horse racing stay at 15%, according to gov.uk. Punters pay no tax on winnings either way; the duty sits with the bookmaker and may shape its margins.
There is no legal duty for a bookmaker to accept your bet. Minimum bet guarantees are voluntary: Ladbrokes and Coral offered shop guarantees on ITV races in 2018, and Sky Bet added one for Class 1 and 2 races that September. The Horseracing Bettors Forum asked for a statutory minimum, but the 2023 White Paper did not adopt it.
Betting on racing within your limits
Racing runs from late morning to the evening, and a busy card can mean a bet every ten minutes. Since 30 September 2026 every UK operator must offer gross deposit limits over 24 hours, seven days and a month. Ladbrokes and Coral apply a reduced limit at once and make an increase wait 24 hours.
If racing betting starts to feel like a chore, take a break. A time-out pauses your account with one bookmaker, and GamStop excludes you from every licensed online operator in Great Britain. For most racing punters, the best of the horse racing betting sites is one with BOG from the morning, clear extra place races and streams you can watch.
Frequently asked questions
Which bookmakers offer best odds guaranteed on horse racing?
Every bookmaker in the ranking on this page offers it on UK and Irish racing, including Sky Bet, William Hill, Ladbrokes, Coral, Betfred, Paddy Power, BetVictor, BoyleSports and bet365. Midnite does not offer it.
Do you compare horse racing odds?
No. Our daily price snapshots cover football only. Racing bookmakers are compared on features such as best odds guaranteed, extra places and live streaming.
What time does best odds guaranteed start?
It depends on the bookmaker. Racing Post lists 08:00 on race day for William Hill and Ladbrokes, and StableBet reports 8am for Betfred, so bets placed the night before may not qualify.
What are extra places?
Extra places pay the place part of an each way bet on more finishing positions than the standard terms. Bookmakers usually choose a few big races each day for the promotion.
Can I watch horse racing live on a betting site?
Most bookmakers stream UK and Irish racing to customers with a funded account or a qualifying bet. Sky Bet, for example, asks for a bet of at least £1 on the race.
Is best odds guaranteed paid on ante-post bets?
Usually not. Betfred's terms, for instance, exclude ante-post bets, and most BOG concessions only start on the morning of the race.
What is a Rule 4 deduction?
When a horse is withdrawn after a market has formed, winning bets placed before the withdrawal are reduced by a set amount per pound to reflect the weaker field. Your bet still stands.
Do I pay tax on horse racing winnings in the UK?
No. UK punters pay no tax on betting winnings. The duty is charged to the bookmaker, and remote bets on UK horse racing are set to stay at the 15% rate when other remote betting moves to 25% in April 2027.
Do bookmakers have to accept my racing bet?
No. No universal service obligation applies to gambling, so a British bookmaker does not have to accept a bet. Minimum bet guarantees exist only as voluntary policies some firms introduced in 2018.
